Below are helpful tips to manage discomfort until you can visit our office:

Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to help remove trapped debris. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and take over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Severe pain may indicate a serious issue such as infection or damage, which requires immediate professional care.

Cut Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze to control bleeding. If the bleeding continues or the injury appears severe, seek emergency medical attention.

Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to minimize swelling. If possible, save any broken pieces and bring them with you to your appointment.

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse gently without scrubbing. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place. If not, store it in milk or water and seek immediate dental care. Quick action increases the chance of saving the tooth.

Tooth Infection

Mild infections may be treated with prescribed antibiotics. However, infections can become serious if left untreated. If you notice swelling, pain, or signs of an abscess, contact us immediately for evaluation and care.

Broken Wires or Braces

If a wire becomes loose or is poking your mouth, try gently repositioning it or cover it with cotton or wax until you can visit your provider. Avoid cutting the wire yourself.

Cold Sores, Canker Sores, and Abscesses

Over-the-counter treatments may help relieve discomfort temporarily. However, abscesses are serious infections that can spread if untreated. Seek professional care as soon as possible if you notice swelling or persistent pain.
