Dental Cleanings & Checkups
Maintain a clean, healthy smile with regular dental cleanings and checkups at least twice a year.
What to Expect During a Dental Exam
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends visiting your dentist at least twice a year, though some patients may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health. Routine exams and professional cleanings play a key role in maintaining both oral and overall health.
During your visit, your dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup that cannot be cleaned at home. This helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
A full examination will also be performed to check your teeth, gums, head, and neck. An oral cancer screening is included, and X-rays may be taken to identify underlying concerns such as bone loss, infections, or other conditions. If any issues are found, a personalized treatment plan will be created.
After the exam, your teeth will be professionally cleaned and polished. Fluoride treatment may be recommended to strengthen enamel and protect against decay. You will also receive personalized guidance on brushing, flossing, and maintaining good oral hygiene habits.
Types of Dental Cleanings
Regular / Preventive Cleaning
This routine cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains from above the gum line. It helps maintain healthy teeth and gums and is typically recommended twice a year, or more frequently if needed.
Gingivitis Cleaning
If early signs of gum disease such as inflammation or bleeding are present, a more thorough cleaning may be required. This treatment removes buildup both above and slightly below the gum line. With proper care and regular visits, gums can return to a healthy condition.
Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
For patients with more advanced gum disease, a deep cleaning may be recommended. This non-surgical procedure removes bacteria, plaque, and tartar from below the gum line and along the root surfaces. A numbing agent may be used for comfort.
In some cases, additional techniques are used to reduce bacteria and support healing. The goal is to decrease inflammation, reduce pocket depth, and prevent further bone loss.
After treatment, maintenance visits every 3–4 months are usually recommended to keep the condition under control and prevent progression.
